The jungle changes completely once the sun goes down. New sounds, eyes glinting among the leaves, frogs appearing where there was nothing before. A night hike in La Fortuna is one of those experiences that stays with you — but to really enjoy it, it helps to come prepared.
Closed, comfortable shoes. Trails can be damp and slippery. Boots or closed shoes with good soles will keep you steady with every step.
Long sleeves. Even though it’s warm, long sleeves protect you from insects and brushing against the vegetation. Neutral colors are better than bright ones.
Insect repellent. A must. Apply it before you head out and bring some along to reapply.
A small flashlight (optional). Your guide carries lighting, but a handheld or headlamp flashlight lets you take your time observing. Red light bothers the animals less.
Water and curiosity. Most important of all: a sense of wonder. Come with an open mind and let the night surprise you.
